Cord Blood

Cord blood, or umbilical cord blood, is the blood remaining in the umbilical cord or placenta after a baby is born. As this blood contains blood stem cells, it is hoped that it may be used to treat blood-related disorders. Currently, no treatment using cord blood-derived stem cells is available. There is an ongoing debate over the ethics and merits of private companies collecting and storing cord blood from newborn babies.
