Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition associated with a shortage of the neurotransmitter dopamine. In the early stages, it is characterised by tremor, slowness of movements and difficulty walking (individuals with PD often find themselves ‘frozen’ in place). As the disease progresses, patients may experience depression, anxiety, and ‘cognitive fog’. There is currently no cure available, although symptoms can be treated. Researchers are investigating different cell therapies for PD, including transplanting foetal brain cells, or engineering dopamine-producing cells.
