Many genetic disorders cause issues with fertility. Understanding the genetic and physiological basis of these issues allows clinicians to provide appropriate reproductive care and advice to individuals wishing to start a family.

Genetic conditions may be inherited from a parent with the same condition, or from parents who are carriers of the genes for this condition. Genetic mutations can also occur spontaneously in the sex cells (sperm or ova) of individuals with no genetic condition. Some individuals planning a family will take part in genetic counselling; based on their family and personal medical history, a medical professional will advise them on the statistical likelihood of their child having a particular genetic disorder, so that they can make informed choices and plan for their family's future.
