Our skin is a multi-purpose organ. It protects us from infection; it detects important sensory information; and it allows metabolic regulation via perspiration. Genetic skin disorders may can cause skin fragility or impaired sensation. The skin can also be damaged by the environment (eg., burns or skin cancer) or as a result of other illness (such as ulcers caused by diabetes). If a large area of skin is damaged, a patient may receive a skin graft from another part of their body or from another individual. Researchers are investigating the use of skin stem cells to promote wound healing. Scientists are also developing tissue engineered models of the different layers of the skin. These can be used to model disease progression, wound healing, and drug development, and may one day be suitable for transplant for patients in need of grafts. In this section, you will find information about different skin conditions and ongoing research into their causes and treatment.
